John F. Deering, RDO, FCLSA
John Deering is President and owner of Winchester Optical, Inc. John’s introduction into opticianry began as a young boy when Arthur Deering would bring home eyeglass frames to be assembled. John began his apprenticeship under Arthur in 1973. John was Massachusetts licensed in both opticianry and contact lenses in 1978. He is certified by the American Board of Opticianry and Advanced Certified by The National Contact Lens Examiners.
Professional Distinctions:
John achieved "Fellow" in the Contact Lens Society of America in 1990. This is the highest level of accomplishment in contact lenses. There are fewer than 200 Fellows in the United States.
He was awarded "Honored Fellow" in the Contact Lens Society of America in 1995. After serving many positions on a national level, he served as President of the Contact Lens Society of America in 1997-1999.
He is a recipient of Opticians Association of Massachusetts Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. This award is given for dedication to opticianry and has been awarded fewer than ten times in the history of Massachusetts. The same organization honored John with the Optician of the Year award in 2008 for "leadership and inspiration in advancing opticianry".
Nationally, John was awarded the Beverly Myers Achievement Award for "outstanding service in the field of ophthalmic optics" by the National Academy of Opticians. This prestigious award has been given by the Academy since 1951.
John believes teaching is the foundation of learning and he has lectured extensively to the ophthalmic industry. He is a certified instructor for both opticianry and contact lenses. He was honored as presenter of the prestigious Theodore Obrig Lecture for ophthalmology at the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmology and also the Kevin Tuohy Lecture for the Contact Lens Society of America. He is now teaching future opticians his craft at the Ben Franklin Institute of Technology in Boston, MA.
