Discussing your visual desires and necessities during your initial contact lens evaluation with John will always provide the best contact lens option for you.

SOFT CONTACT LENSES

This most commonly worn type of contact lens has become incredibly versatile for treating most people with a wide range of refractive errors.  Soft lenses can now be worn by most people correcting near and far sightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia (multifocal or bifocal lenses).  They also come in a wide range of replacement methods from new contact lenses every day to replacing your lenses just every month.

GAS PERMEABLE CONTACT LENSES:

Gas permeable lenses, although less common, are still the ideal option for the sharpest visual acuity and good ocular health.  GP lenses are also used to achieve good acuity with irregular corneas from keratoconus, marginal degenerations, and post surgical irregularities.  These lenses are customized and designed especially for each patient.

SPECIALTY CONTACT LENSES:

At Winchester optical we also fit some special contact lens for unique lifestyle options or therapeutic reasons.

“Piggy back”:  Actually consisting of two contact lenses.  For some keratoconus patients a soft contact lens is put into the eye and additionally a gas permeable lens is placed on top of it to produce a more stable and comfortable contact lens fit.

Hybrid Lenses:  These lenses consist of a gas permeable center that is surrounded by soft contact lens “skirt”.  This gives the patient the benefits of sharp vision of a gas permeable lens with the comfort of a soft contact lens.

Intralimbal and Scleral Lenses:  For severe dry eye, called Sjogrens syndrome, and very severe cases of corneal irregularity.   These are large gas permeable lenses that cover the entire surface of your cornea and sometimes even drape over your conjunctiva (the white part of your eye).  These large lenses are incredibly stable on the eye so they can account for a large amount of corneal abnormality.

Orthokeratology, or Ortho-k, is a non-surgical process that reshapes the cornea while you sleep with a specially designed gas permeable contact lens. The result is the temporary correction of mild to moderate nearsightedness so that you can be contact lens free while you are awake.
